Are you a 100x backend software engineer with team management experience and technical founder/leadership aspirations? Are you looking to join a super-fast-growing startup where you can set product strategy and prioritise / manage product work as we continue to scale and grow? If so we need to talk! As the Director of Engineering you will be a key member of the company's executive management team and the leader of our 5-person (and rapidly growing) distributed engineering team. As such you will be responsible for attracting and managing top tier technical talent and providing direction, mentoring and support to both backend and frontend engineers. To do so effectively, you will need to be a strong contributing member of the engineering team, live in the code and be able to provide real-time, detailed technical feedback whenever needed. In addition you will be the custodian of the company's engineering team culture and inspire and motivate team members to grow and learn as we ship product in an extremely fast paced, scaled environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be known internally as the go-to person for solving the company's hardest engineering challenges
  • Manage and scale our software engineering team:
    • Understand and set daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly engineering priorities to balance long-term development goals with short-term client and performance requirements
    • Inspire team cohesion and set and ensure buy-in to the company's product vision
    • Define and implement our medium-to-long-term engineering staffing strategy
  • Ensure agility, productivity and product quality:
  • Drive engineering team efficiency and productivity by providing unambiguous direction, defining priorities, and setting expectations to deliver new features and product improvements in weekly increments/sprints
  • Define, build and enforce testing protocols, processes and systems in an environment where every engineer is responsible for the quality of his/her own code
  • Be the last line of defense on testing
  • Be the glue between the Engineering and Customer Success teams:
    • Be the primary technical contact for our Customer Success team and provide timely direction, training and support on issues that require technical or engineering knowledge
    • Represent the Engineering team on high-priority client calls where technical knowledge and insights are required
    • Be the company's face of major product releases, including recording product launch training videos, explaining new features and addressing technical customer questions

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 2+ years of software engineering team management experience
  • 4+ years of experience with python
  • A passion for fast-paced development and weekly or daily releases
  • Experience with Agile / Scrum development processes
  • Fluency with:
    • Python
    • Postgres
    • SQLAlchemy
    • Ubuntu
    • AWS
    • JavaScript/AngularJS

Nice-to-haves:

  • 3+ years of "in the trenches" startup experience
  • Experience working with a distributed software engineering team
  • Experience with:
